Soulful house blends house music’s steady four-on-the-floor groove with the warmth of soul and gospel — live-sounding instrumentation, uplifting chord progressions and strong vocals sit at the front of the mix rather than being an afterthought. It grew out of the New York and Chicago house scenes in the late 1980s and 90s and has stayed a favourite for DJs who want emotion as well as rhythm.
It suits sophisticated, relaxed settings — rooftop bars, brunches, upscale lounges and wedding drinks receptions — where you want a dancefloor mood without the harder edge of tech house or techno.
